In the ground. Make sure you have a lot of room for them to spread. They climb too and will wrap them selves around your other plants. Just make sure they get enough sun and water. They are really easy to care for.

If you are planting other vine type veggies, make sure the different vine plants are spaced away from one another, tastes of one veg may carry over into the other. Who wants a squash that tastes like cucumber. . . ???

I have found that the way to grow cucumbers that works best for me and conserves space is to grow the plants in a wire cage made from masonry mesh. The mesh has 6″x6″ squares in it.
I transplant the seedling, about 3 of them on a 12″ diameter mound of garden soil and then mulch around the seedlings. I Don’t let the mulch touch the plants though. I then place the cage over the plants. The cage is about 2′ in diameter and 5′ tall. As the plants grow I train the vines up and around the cage.
This method works well for many reasons. The best reason is it saves a lot of garden space. The cage keeps the fruit off the ground and as many can tell you, weeding around cucumber vines on the ground is a lot of work. Air circulation around the vines is much better in the cages and many diseases that cucumber plants get are prevented.

Grow them on a mound. Make a Mountain of soil and put the plant on top of it. This helps them grow better.

Growing on a mound is a way of preventing crown rot
Don’t worry about cross pollention except if you plan to save seeds

For non-bush kinds, a trellis is best. It keeps the fruit off the ground. A trellis will produce straighter & cleaner cucumbers and allows easier harvest.
