Or does this depend on their sort only?

The way cucumbers taste also depends on what you are also growing in your garden. I don’t know what it is that you are NOT supposed to grow them with though.

Pick them when they’re young as they get bitter tasting as they get older.

there are different types of cukes, english cukes which are really long and thin but sweet tasteing. pickling cukes tend to be bitter because they are for canning pickles. i always grew my cukes along with green peppers and green beans. they tend to grow better with other veggies on the vine

It’s not how you grow them.
    It’s how you prepare them.
Cut a small section off both ends, then rub the cut off pieces over and over on the exposed part of the cuke.
You will see a lot of white stuff forming keep rubbing until it seems to stop .
Do this on both ends, then cut off a small slice each end and discard.
You have removed all the stuff that makes them bitter enjoy.

Certain cukes are less likely to get bitter. Lemon cucumbers, Armenian cucumbers, and all the “seedless” sorts tend to be less bitter. The main thing is to give them the best growing conditions you can – fertile soil, ample water, full sun, feeding a couple of times during the growing season – so they grow quickly. When they struggle to grow, they aren’t as tasty. And be sure to pick them while they are young. When they have developed mature seeds, they are sure to be bitter.

Keep the soil moist at all times OR you’ll get bitter-tasting cucumbers. The bitter taste is associated to water-stress at any time during their maturation. Since cucumbers are shallow-rooted, I’d suggest you water deeply to promote deeper rooting and to prevent the roots from drying out. Incorporate compost into the soil and use a much around your plants to help prevent the roots from drying out.

I’ve found that cucumbers prefer a little more nitrogen than other vegetables.

Hope this information will get you the results you’re looking for! GOOD LUCK!
